This guide will walk you through the process of disabling the Windows Explorer AutoPlay pop up window for all removable drives. Illustrated screen shots have been included for your convenience.
WARNING: Misuse of the Registry Editor can cause serious damage to your PC.
STEP 1: Back up your registry
Before changing anything in your registry, it’s a good idea to back it up. This will prevent you from having to reinstall your operating system in the event of an error.
1. Click [Start] then [Run]
2. Type [regedit], click [OK]
3. Go to [File], then [Export]
4. Pick a location to export it to, name it then click [Save]
STEP 2: Disabling the AutoPlay
1. Click [Start] then [Run]
2. Type [regedit], click [OK]
3. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
4. If the key [NoDriveTypeAutoRun] exist, right-click, choose [Modify], type 4 in the [Value data] box, select [Hexadecimal], click [OK]
5. If the key [NoDriveTypeAutoRun] does not exist, create the key of type REG_DWORD first. Then right-click [NoDriveTypeAutoRun] click [Modify], type 4 in the [Value data] box, select [Hexadecimal], click [OK].
